How much does stump grinding cost?

HomeGuide puts the first stump at roughly $120 to $400, with extra stumps on the same visit usually cheaper. Price depends on diameter, root spread, and access. Ask whether grinding is included in a removal quote, because many tree services price it separately and the difference can be a few hundred dollars.

Does a tree service in California need a license?

Yes, in most cases. Since January 1, 2025, California's minor-work exemption covers jobs under $1,000 including labor and materials, and tree work needs a C-49 Tree and Palm license from CSLB. Check the license number on the CSLB site and ask for proof of workers' comp and liability insurance before work starts.

Your rights when hiring a contractor in California

Does my contractor need a California license?

Yes, if the job (labor plus materials) is $1,000 or more. California raised the minor-work exemption from $500 to $1,000 on Jan 1, 2025 (AB 2622; Bus. & Prof. Code 7048). Check any license free at cslb.ca.gov.

How big a down payment can a contractor ask for?

For home improvement contracts, no more than 10% of the price or $1,000, whichever is less (Bus. & Prof. Code 7159). A bigger upfront demand is a red flag.

Can I cancel a home improvement contract after signing?

Generally yes: California gives a 3-business-day right to cancel most home improvement contracts signed at your home, and the contract must include the cancellation notice (Bus. & Prof. Code 7159; Civil Code 1689.5–1689.7).
